Welcome aboard

The new frontier of pool physics

Frontier Pool lives up to its name twice over. Its physics engine sits at the frontier of billiards simulation, and its table sits on an actual frontier: a lounge aboard a spaceship, drifting past the rings of Saturn. It is a free 3D pool game that runs right in your browser, with nothing to install and no account to create.

The engine is state of the art and built for exactly one job. Written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, it treats the cue tip, the cloth, the cushions and the pocket jaws as physical objects, then holds the results up against high-speed video of real shots filmed at up to 3,000 frames per second. Cushion rebounds and ball-to-ball friction were refit until the engine matched the footage, and spin transfer was checked against separate clips. Squirt, throw, swerve, massé and jump shots are never canned animations; they come out of the same equations as a simple stun shot.

Choose from six games: 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, straight pool, snooker and 6-red snooker. Challenge a friend on the same device, take on a computer opponent at one of four levels, or play pool online through matchmaking or a private link. Whether you want a quick rack of 8-ball or a long, thoughtful frame of snooker, the table is ready when you are.

Watch a shot

Nothing is scripted

Scroll to play it out: the cue ball pots the yellow, comes off the cushion and curves to a stop. Every shot you play is worked out the same way.

  1. 01

    Spin & slide

Strike low and the cue ball spins back; strike high and it follows through. It slides first, then grips the cloth and rolls, just as it does on a real table.

  2. 02

    Cushions & pockets

Balls come off the cushions at the angles you would expect. Clip the jaw of a pocket and the ball can rattle out, hang on the lip or drop.

  3. 03

    Swerve, massé & jump

Side spin nudges the cue ball off its line. Raise the cue to curve it around a ball in the way, or strike down hard to jump right over it.

Everything on the table

Made for every kind of player

A quick game against the computer, a long frame with a friend, or an online match with people watching. It is all here, and it is all free.

A lounge with a view

Play by the window of a spaceship lounge as Saturn drifts past. The balls gleam under the lamps and reflect each other as they roll.

Play friends online

Jump into a quick match or send a friend a private link. Chat during the game, ask for a rematch and let up to 100 people watch.

Computer opponents

Four levels, from Easy to Perfect. Start against a forgiving opponent and work your way up to one that hardly ever misses.

Instant replay & practice

Watch any shot again in slow motion to see exactly what happened. On the practice table, move balls anywhere and retake a shot until it drops.

Laptop, tablet or phone

It runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install. On a touch screen you get an overhead view and simple touch controls.

Real table sounds

Recorded pool-hall takes for every click, cushion thud and pocket drop. The collision picks the take and how hard it plays, and each sound comes from where it happens on the table.

Six ways to play

Find your game

From a quick rack of 8-ball to a full frame of snooker. Every mode follows clearly documented house rules.

8

8-ball

Solids, stripes and the eight

The classic. After the break, your first legal pot assigns your group: solids or stripes. Clear your seven, then pocket the eight to win. Choose called-shot rules, where you name the ball and pocket every time, or casual rules where slop counts. Sink the eight early, in the wrong pocket or with a foul and the game is lost.

Play 8-ball
9

9-ball

Lowest ball first

Rotation pool at its quickest. Every shot must hit the lowest-numbered ball first, but anything that drops afterwards counts, and the nine wins whenever it falls legally, even on the break. Fouls give your opponent ball in hand, the shot after the break can be a push-out, and three fouls in a row lose the rack.

Play 9-ball
10

10-ball

Call every shot

Ten-ball rewards intent. You still hit the lowest ball first, but every shot is called: name the ball and the pocket. Make the called shot to stay at the table, because a lucky pot alone will not keep your turn. Legally pocket the called ten in its called pocket to win; a ten on the break or an uncalled ten is spotted.

Play 10-ball
15

Straight pool

Race to 50

Also known as 14.1 continuous. Call any ball into any pocket and score a point for each legal pot. When fourteen balls are down they are re-racked around the last one, so a long run depends on planning that break shot. Fouls cost points, three in a row cost many more, and the first player to 50 wins.

Play straight pool

Snooker

Reds, colours, breaks

Pot a red for one point, then nominate a colour worth two to seven. Colours return to their spots while reds remain; after the last red, clear the colours in order from yellow to black. Fouls give points to your opponent, ball in hand goes in the D, and free balls and misses are refereed for you. The highest score wins the frame.

Play snooker

6-red snooker

A shorter frame

All the decisions of snooker with six reds instead of fifteen. Values, nominations and the final colour clearance work the same way, so you get a quicker frame and a friendly way to learn the scoring sequence before you take on the full pack.

Your first visit

From the lobby to the break

  1. 1

    Choose your game

Pick a mode and an opponent in the lobby: the computer, a friend on the same device, an online match or the practice table.

  2. 2

    Line up the shot

Drag across the cloth to aim and fine-tune with ← →, holding Shift for tiny steps. Set spin on the cue-ball pad, lift the cue for jumps and massé, and switch between Club, Overhead and Cue cameras.

  3. 3

    Strike

Hold Space or the Shoot button to build power, then let go. On desktop you can also hold the right mouse button instead. Esc cancels a charged shot, and V replays the last one.

Good to know

Before you chalk up

Free browser pool, with the details up front.

Is Frontier Pool free?

Yes. Every mode, online play included, is free. There is no download and no account. The first visit loads the 3D lounge, so give it a moment on a slower connection.

Can I play pool online with friends?

Yes. Choose Online, then join matchmaking with the modes you are happy to play or create a private friend link. Players can chat during the match, ask for a rematch afterwards and share a spectator link with up to 100 people.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. On a phone or tablet the game starts in the overhead view: drag to aim, set spin on the cue-ball pad, then hold Shoot. A bigger screen gives you more table, and older devices may run it less smoothly.

How realistic is the physics?

Very. Spin, cushion rebounds and the way balls hit each other were tuned against slow-motion video of real shots. Swerve, massé and jump shots all work, and none of them are canned animations.

Which game should I start with?

8-ball is the friendliest start. 9-ball is quick and always tells you what to hit. If you are curious about snooker, 6-red teaches the scoring with fewer balls on the table.

What do I need to play?

Just an up-to-date browser such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. There is nothing to download and no account to create.
